A Certified Brain Injury Training: The Official BIAA Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists (ACBIS) Course will be held on 6 November 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM and 7 November 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM.
This course is offered in conjunction with the ACRM Training Institute at the ACRM 2022 Annual Conference. Full-day Instructional Courses are available 6-7 November.

Who Should Attend?
The ACBIS Course and CBIS Certification Exam are intended for direct-care paraprofessionals at all levels and experienced professionals who want a strong foundation in best practices for brain injury rehabilitation.
Course Description
The Brain Injury Association of America offers a national certification program through its Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists (ACBIS). This two-day training is the official course designed to prepare participants to sit for the Certification Exam and join more than 7,000 Certified Brain Injury Specialists worldwide by applying for and passing a national examination. The course is also appropriate for paraprofessionals and professionals at all levels who simply want a strong foundation in the best practices in brain injury rehabilitation and/or CME/CEUs.
Learning Objectives
- Define or describe topics including: diagnostic imaging; medical/physical/cognitive/neurobehavioral/psychosocial consequences; pediatrics/adolescents/aging/military populations; concussions/mTBI; disorders of consciousness; rehabilitation philosophy; outcome measurement; care management; family/cultural/gender/sexuality issues; neuropsychology; participation/return to work
- Prepare to successfully earn a national credential
Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) Training
Brain injury-serving organizations value hiring and training CBIS certified staff, because it allows them to work with and promote clinicians who understand the unique needs of persons recovering from brain injury and staying abreast of current resources in the field.
The ACBIS Training Course will focus on:
- Diagnostic imaging
- Medical, physical, cognitive, neurobehavioral, and psychosocial consequences
- Pediatrics, adolescents, and aging with a TBI
- Concussions and mTBI
- Disorders of consciousness
- Rehabilitation philosophy, outcome measurement, and care management
- Effect of injuries on families
- Cultural, gender, and sexuality issues
- Military populations
- Neuropsychology
- Participation and return to work
Recommended Study/Resource Materials
You must purchase in advance from BIAA and bring to the course.
The Essential Brain Injury Guide (EBIG 5.0) and a Study Guide are available from the Brain Injury Association of America. We recommend acquiring the EBIG and/or Study Guide prior to the training. Plan ahead: orders received by Thursdays at 3:00 p.m. eastern are shipped on Friday, orders received after 3:00 p.m. ship the following Friday.
After the Training
Becoming A Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS)
- Meet eligibility requirements
- Participate in optional training
- Pass the national exam
Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) Basic Eligibility Requirements
- 500 hours of currently verifiable direct contact experience with an individual or individuals with brain injury
- High school diploma or equivalent
CBIS Application Process
- Apply online through the Brain Injury Association of America’s Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists at CBIS Application Portal
- Pay the application fee at Pay CBIS Application Fee
- Provide the employment verification form to a supervisor who can verify that you have at least 500 hours of direct contact
- Once your application has been approved, you can take the online CBIS national examination
